The National Gallery of Indonesia (GNI) was established with an intention to build the National Art House / National Cultural Development Center which has been initiated since the 1960s. 
While waiting for the realisation of the National Arts House, Prof. Dr. Fuad Hasan (as the former Minister of Education and Culture) initiated the renovation of the main building into the Ministry of Education and Culture's Fine Arts Exhibition Building, with means of activity and art appreciation which was inaugurated in 1987.
